South Strand couple raises funds and provides shelter for stray cats

SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Whether he’s standing on a street corner dressed as a “cat in the hat” or taking in stray animals in his own backyard, a South Strand man makes sure all the animals are supported.

Jaeger told WMBF News he started volunteering with Coastal Animal Rescue (No Kill) three years ago. He said he would attend PetSmart’s adoption events, but wanted to attract larger crowds.

“One year after volunteering at PetSmart, how can I attract more people here? » he asked.

That’s when Jaeger said his sister bought him his famous “Cat in the Hat” costume, designed his sign and set up his location on the corner of Highway 544.

Rain or shine, Jaeger said he gets up or sits down from time to time, greeting drivers and encouraging them to adopt the next member of their family.

But Jaeger doesn’t stop there.

He built what he calls a catio in his backyard as his furry family members grew. He said he wanted to give them a space of their own, fully equipped with bug liner and their own television.

Jaeger also explained that he helps his community by mowing lawns or trimming trees for donations to fund cat supplies like litter and food.

“We love doing this. We can’t go on vacation, we don’t even want to go on vacation because we don’t want to leave these guys,” Jaeger said. “You know, it’s a huge love story.”

His girlfriend of 18 years, Debby Gipsom, is the reason Jaeger said his love for cats continues to grow. He said she supports his cat rescue efforts, while continuing to battle two types of cancer.

“We’re one big happy family, we just take one day at a time,” Gibson said.

Jaeger said he is encouraging donations and volunteers this holiday season to Coastal Animal Rescue and hopes to continue his efforts for as long as he is alive.
